ESS to foster links between West
and East Europe….
We cordially welcome all our colleagues from different countries of Europe and beyond to meet in pearl of Georgia – Batumi, the ancient city on the black sea coast of Colchis. Here is the Gonio Fortress belonged to Absyrtus, - young brother of Medea of Colchis (13 BC). Absyrtus was involved in Argonauts’ escape with the golden fleece from Colchis. After Medea’s name the word Medicine takes its root. Batumi derived from Greek “Bathys” - deep harbor- is sometimes identified with “Portus Altus” a Latin rendition of the locale's Greek name, of the Tabula Peutingeriana, a road map from the Roman period.
The territory of present-day Batumi dates to the 8th-7th century BC. It is located on a hillock which is now popularly referred to as Tamar's Fortress after the medieval Georgian Queen Tamar (r. 1184–1213). The local was a home to a Roman military fort during the reign of Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD), but was deserted for the fortress of Petra constructed under Justinian I (r. 527–565). Batumi is an important cultural, scientific and political center of Georgia. Here like in ancient times West meets East. That’s why the primary mission of annual meeting of European Society of Surgery here to provide a West-East forum for presenting the developing state of the art and science of general and sub-specialty surgery and the elevation of the standards of the surgical profession. Since its first meeting in 1997, the Society has hosted its annual meetings in countries of both Western and Eastern Europe. This has led to the development of closer ties between academic departments, the holding of skills, workshops and visits by the Board Members to demonstrate modern surgical techniques and set up education links.
The mission of ESS Annual Conferences is accomplished primarily by presenting selected presentations containing the most current information available on clinical and research topics related to surgery or surgical specialties, including studies on outcomes, practice of surgery and ethical issues. The Annual meeting of the European Society of Surgery is designed to provide comprehensive educational experiences in different fields of Surgery. It is the Society's intent to bring together at this meeting the leading surgeons and scientists from the old and new Europe and other continents to freely and openly discuss their latest clinical and research findings and by all these to support young physicians in obtaining proper theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Welcome to Georgia, Welcome to Batumi…. where West meets East.
